It’s a fact that making searches on the web is one thing and becoming a pro googler is another different thing altogether, mostly when performing an online research on the conceivably large internet. Once in a while you aimed at getting more specific results from your queries but that wasn’t achieved, probably making you so desperate to move to page two of Google results.

Presented below are a few tricks to obtain better results from your searches:

  1. Use quotation to search for only web pages containing same phrase. You may be interested in getting all results containing a particular statement or phrase. You need to surround the phrase with quotation marks. For example, if I need results for the game reserves in kenya and nowhere else, I would format my search query to be , Game reserves in “Kenya”.
  2. Use OR and AND statements to combine searches. You maybe interested in combining two or more searches in the same query or you may need results of one search or another search using same search query. For example, I may need to get game reserves in Kenya and Nigeria, for this I would issue a search like, Game reserves in Kenya AND Game reserves in Nigeria. If I need results for either countries I separate the two queries using OR.
  3. Use the minus sign(-) to exclude search results. For example a search like List of universities-MIT will get all the results except for those containing the term MIT.
  4. Use parentheses to make more complex searches. You can use parentheses to combine multiple complex searches with the AND or/and OR operators to achieve even a more sophisticated results.
  5. Search through a specific website. Use (:) to search through a specific site, for example the search , Database systems: techbyte360.com would return top results from techbyte360.com only.
  6. Search for all related terms using * . For example a search like macdonald * employee will give all results with macdonald and employee plus any other relevant phrase. This is mostly used when you are not sure of the exact words to search.
  7. Use movie syntax to display the details about a particular movie , for example, movie:Minecraft returns details of Minecraft movie
  8. Use map sysntax to display map information of the search item for example map:Nairobi returns map information of Nairobi if there is none the most relevant is displayed.
  9. Use google search dictionary to search for a word’s meaning eg, define:computer returns the meaning of a computer.
  10. Weather syntax returns the weather information of a given location. Eg weather: New York returns weather updates for New York city.
